3 spd shifter bushings

The "3 on the tree" shifter on my 65 f 100 is pretty sloppy and I'm missing gears when I shift. If I'm really gentle all goes well but, every 4th or 5th time I try to go into 1st it won't be there. So, I roll to the side, go through the shifting pattern and it will work again. I'm wondering if it's the bushings in the column that are shot and if so, can they be repaired w/o removing the column...and where would be the best place to find new parts? Thanks (my first f100 !).

I would first crawl under it and take a look at the linkage.See if has the proper bushings and cotter pins holding your linkage togather. When I checked mine It had nails and other BS holding it togather.I had a lot of problems with it until I replaced it all with the right stuff.

3 on the tree bushings

All looks "factory" on the linkage. I forgot to mention that by lining up the linkage on the end of the column the shifting sequence will work normally... that's why I figured it was in the steering column. What to do next? Thanks.

Might be in need of adjustment on the top of the shift linkage so that they are both together when it's in neutral. Tom

Sounds like the shift tube is worn. There is no real help for it.
Hows the collar where the shifter goes in? They tend to crack and wear out. Any of the site sponsors will have them. When you go to replace it you might find that the hole in the shift tube is worn oblong. It can be made to work better but not perfect. The repair will last years but not 30. You'll have to be good at brazing. After you pull the steering wheel and remove the collar slide the tube part way out of the column braze up the hole 100% file and grind the tube to a smooth finish. reinstall all the tube and collar, paint the end of the shifter with a sharpie marker while wet stuff it in the hole the marker will transfer to the tube. drill a hole at the mark the same size as the nub on the shifter.
It's a pain but it will fix it.
