Tranny Fluid Puddle

I went away for a month and when I came back home there was a large puddle of trans fluid under the truck, probably a liter. It wasn't leaking before I left when I was driving it everyday. I checked the trans pan, dipstick base and it doesn't appear to be coming from either of those locations. I removed the inspection cover and there is a puddle in the bell housing under the torque converter and flexplate. Any ideas why this wouldn't leak when driving, but then would after sitting for a month?

I had this problem with a 64 Galixie, and was told that on some of these old auto's that sit for awhile that the torque convertor would drain back into the pan and then out the overflow. Just have to start it once and while. Did it when sitting over the winter.

Front seal worn and hard, otherwise it would have sealed even if there was converter drainback. Converter could be grooved from hard seal, as well.

Topped up the fluid and drove it the last couple days without any leaks. Should this leak occur normally? or is indicating a worn seal or some other type of failure?

If its at the bell-housing it's a worn seal leaking due to drain back.
But if you fix the seal it will still drain back and then mite leak out the dip stick hole.

When it happened to me, it was a fairly new rebuild. I used to keep the truck indoors and let it sit for days or weeks without driving it. I drive it a lot more now, it has 27,000 miles on the rebuild and I don't notice any puddeling if it sits a couple of weeks.

Similar subject, different problem: Mine leaks out of the speedo cable. It's a 65 COM, so it's got the steel gear, not the plastic one. Is there supposed to be an O ring or something that sits down inside that cable or perhaps around the shaft on the gear?

Neal, there should be a o-ring on the shaft above the gear, should have a grove where it goes.

Well, since most of the fluid's leaked out, I'll pull the gear and see what I can find. Anyone know what diameter ring I'll need?

I just rebuilt a C4, the speedo gear seal should? be the same. I believe it was a number 113 or 115 o-ring. One fits the speedo gear seal, the other fits the dipstick tube. I just don't remember which is which!!

Neal, Something else might be afoot. I would think you should be able to pull the speedo cable without any fluid leaking. By it's design the fluid could follow the cable to the head and drip on your shoes if it was allowed to do that.
