hey everyone Im new to these forums, its great to see so many others love the great 300 as much as me. I own 3 great trucks a 1989 f150 xlt 4x4 my work truck, 1978 f250 custom 4x4 4speed with 4.10 gears and 33 inch tires, and my beater 1982 f100 4x2 that i drove off the lot brand new almost 25 years ago. all 3 have the inline six. My f100 has 244,132 miles on the clock, this truck has been driven to hell and back more times then i can count. its hauled so much scrap metal that the rear tires rubed on the wheel wells, it pulled my sisters car on a trailer from Austin, Texas to Cedar Rapids, Iowa twice. its overheated alot, to the point of smoke blowing all over the place, it rolled backwords down the boat ramp into the flood waters, had it pulled out with a tractor. the trucks always screaming for every thing its worth with my foot threw the floor all the time, it had the same oil in it for 3 years, before i got around to changing it. I slid down a icy hill and rearended a ups truck, so for almost 2 years my daily driver had no hood or front fenders on it, simply becouse i didnt have the money to fix it, it went threw 2 winters and a bunch of rain like that. now everyone is telling me that my truck is dieing there is oil every where under the hood the lifters tick but now they dont stop like they use to, when shes running cold you pop the hood and all you can see is smoke, it spews a river of oil out of the breather, it sucks oil threw the pcv valve and right into the carb it go's, the engine shakes at idle, black soot will be on the ground next to the tailpipe. and every now and then its fun to take her down a back road and floor it just to see the pure blue cloud come out of the back and go blowing away. this truck is my expirament just to see how much this motor can take before it gives up, and when she does die im gonna throw a remanufactured 300 in her place and start it all over again.
I have have heard so many stories like this all of my life. That's why I bought a ford. I couldn't find a 67-72 F100 for sale with a 300, so I settled on a low miles 360 V8 in a 72. I broke down too many times, so it now has a built 300 inline in it. I couldn't be happier. I hope to be driving it the rest of my life. I just turned 20 so it should be a while.
Best regards
By the way I love the name, I buy Evan Williams more because it's cheaper.
I hear stories like that a lot too. Sounds like she served you well the past 25 years. It makes me proud that I'm a Ford guy when I hear stories like this...lol. If it were a small block chevy, you would have went through more engines than you have socks.
b/s thats another generalization sbc are pretty dang good engines. It mostly just depends on how you treat them in my mind. I know a guy who didn't change his oil in his 300 for 30k miles and blew it up. On the other hand i know it can take 1 hell of a beating. Still though i beleive the 350 sbc has been produced for over 50 years, the longest lasting engine series for a v8 anywayz. That doesn't just happen because, you have to rebuild them constantly. I also know a guy who has 380,000 miles on his 350 sbc and still runs like a champ although he's an old man and has always baby'd it.
the small block chevy's are good engines. My neighbor has a 350 in his 2500 Excab long bed and tows a backhoe since he bought it new in 98'. 300,000 miles towing runs like new. But it is on it's 3rd 4L80E tranny.
But i'm don't think one would take the abuse a 300 would. Nothing against Chevy's but i am a Ford man.
Oh yeah, personally the 350 would be my first choice in an engine if I was looking for a chevy, simply because we have had good experience with them here, as well as the 300. But I think that it wouldnt take the abuse that a 300 would, because of the way we runs trucks around here. Just my .02.
