I have a 68 f250 with a 360 and a 3spd column shift. I am having a problem going from 2nd and 3rd back into first. I was wondering if there was something inside of the column, or if it was just the bushings on the linkages. The collar is a little loose so I am going to change it, but it seems like the colar might not be the problem. Just wanted to see if there was anything that went out a lot. I know that the standard trans is not that common on these trucks, but any help would be apreceated. Thanks.
I had a similar problem on my truck, but mine has been converted to 3spd on the floor, and so did a friend of mine with her 3spd on the tree. What I had to do to mine was go under the truck and adjust the linkage that conects to the transmition, when the 1/R was in neutral and the 2/3 was in neutral the plates didn't line up, all I had to do was adjust them until they did. I don't think she did anythin about hers she just learned to shift differently (kinda had to make a U going back into 1 after going into 2 or 3) I would suggest trying my idea before her idea.
The tube in the column has a hole that the shift lever fits into. Those holes get oversized after years of shifting. You have to pull the steering column to replace it. Last one I did was about $25.00, but that was a while ago. Even after I went to floor shift I still had trouble with the first to second shift if you are in a hurry. It's a transmission flaw and the fact that nobody makes a good quality shifter for a 3-speed. Now I have a T-10 with a competition shifter and it's like being in another world.
