Strange Problem

I have an electrical problem that started occuring. I have a 69 F100, 302 with a Mallory Unilite distributor. When I turn off my ignition sometimes the engine keeps running. If I unplug the ignition switch it continues to run. When I unplug the black wire from the "I" terminal on the starter solenoid the engine cuts off. I replaced the starter solenoid and still have the same problem with the new one.

Any ideas?

run a ground wire to the back side of the siloniod and if you are running high octane that might be a reason also

Next time it happens, leave the ignition switch in the off position and give the voltage regulator a hard thump with a srewdriver handle. The contacts inside are pitted and sticking closed. Report your findings.

Red69,

The problem may be the lack of an external resistor for your voltage regulator. When I installed an MSD box and distributor on my 351W the MSD instructions stated that I may need to install a resistor that came in the kit to prevent engine run-on. I installed a new voltage regulatory prior to the motor swap and did not end up needing it. Hope this helps.

Ok I'll give those ideas a try. When I kill the switch the Alt. light does come on so I assumed the regulator was ok, but I'll check it. I still can't figure out why there is power on the "I" terminal of the starter solenoid all the time.

As far as the gas goes I am running high Octane because I have a 10.9:1 compression. The problem is not desieling. It still idles normal when the switch is off or even unplugged.

The regulator may be the problem because this morning when I got to work it switched off fine. Intermitant problems are a pain to locate! Anyone know if the "I" terminal is supposed to be always hot on the solenoid?
