72 F250 2WD Power Steering Box Leaking

I believe its a Siganaw (or however you spell it) leaks a lot out of what appears to be the bottom shaft seal. The steering box is otherwise good and tight and steers nice. Are these seals an easy fix or am I better off getting a rebuit? I've see a couple of rebuild seal kits at NAPA and others.

This is my junk hauler and not a daily driver so I'm not looking for a huge investement but I'm ruining my driveway.

You can get a seal kit for the gear. Ya gotta have a big socket to remove the nut on the bottom. There are two seals in there back to back. I have bought them from Advance Auto.

Hello,
When I rebuilt my stearing gear box it was not very hard. The only problem I had was getting the seal kits. There were two different ones. There was an upper and lower seal kit. I just asked for the seal kit for my stearing box and the guy just gave me one of them. When I pulled it of and started to take it apart I noticed I did not have all the seals. I had to go back and get the other kit. You might have a different gear box or something I wouldn't think so though. Just trying to save you some time. Watch out for the bearing when you take it apart. Mine dropped to the ground. I had one of those OMG moments when that happened. Found them all and has not leaked for about 13+ years.

Good Luck

A 3 jaw gear puller to get the pitman arm off. Dig out the old seals with brass welding rod as sharp hooks never use steel as it will scratch the shaft and case bore. Use anti-seize compound on the splines, torque down then retorque after driving 20-30 miles as the arm will climb up the taper and reduce the torque.

I think it is best to get the complete seal kit, (about $10.00, I think) but do not open the gear, youse be opening a big ol can o worms. The seals are on the outer ends of the gear and usually all that is required to make the fix. The lower will be the leaker more often.
