Does anyone know if there were any 99 Expeditions with analog odometers/trip meters? Mine is digital and I don't think it was optional. I have been wrong before though. Thanks in advance!
No. I am trying to verify a picture of a supposed '99 Ford Expedition with less than 10k miles on the odometer. The picture shows an analog odometer. Am I being bullsh!##ed, or did some '99s come with analog odometers?
On 1997 - 1998 instrument clusters, the odometer is analog and the speedometer is dead center in the cluster. The tach is on one side of the speedo and four minor guages are clustered together on the other side of the speedo. On 1999-2002 models, the odometer is LCD, the four guages are split up, with two to the left of the tach, and two to the right of the speedometer.
OK. Here's what started this thread: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AITIt is supposedly an engine from a '99 Expedition with less than 5k miles on it. The transmission is also for sale from the same seller. Notice the analog odometer in the photograph. I sent an email asking the seller if he had the VIN and he replied with a single word, "Yes." How about that? The guy is a real jerk and he is either confused or lying about the year and the mileage. Should I pursue this further with eBay or just forget about it?
I have a '99 with 182k miles on it. It has given me all sorts of trouble in the last year, but I can't seem to bear parting with it. This engine, or one fitting its description, would really extend the life of the truck. Should I just have my engine rebuilt? Does anyone know someone capable of a quality rebuild in the Winston-Salem, NC area? I'm open for any and all opinions. Thanks.
Still doesn't work. Both links end up taking me to the library of congress. (??) Just do a search in eBay for that item number (7966419925) and you'll see the auction for the engine.
I could pull out all the service records and be very specific, but I am at work, so I'll give it to you in general terms. I purchased my '99 Expy in 2001 with 80k miles on it. This email is not a complaint, I have been very happy with my Expedition. 100k miles out of a 15,000 dollar truck makes economical sense to me at $0.15/mile.
The problems started when I took a long road trip last year and several hundred miles into the trip, a loud pop came from the drivetrain. The truck lurched for a split second and then continued on its way. This was accompanied by a drop of the tach needle to 0 and back up to speed. This continued for the rest of the trip. In subsequent weeks, the truck would just cut off when this occurred. After many trips to Ford dealerships (where I was told that I should just buy a new one ), the service manager at Regal Ford in Winston-Salem, correctly diagnosed the problem as a faulty ABS sensor on the rear. It had evidently loaded up with metal filings and was sending wacked out data to the PCM. I guess the computer chooses to kill power when it thinks it is going down the highway at 65 mph and suddenly the rear wheels are responding that they are stopped. Along this same timeframe, my odometer started cutting in and out. After a new ABS sensor, my truck stopped cutting off at speed, but the odometer continued to go out intermittently. After my truck sat at the airport for a week, I headed back home and it was running like a stuck pig. It almost seemed like a clogged catalytic converter, but it was eventually diagnosed as a bad PCM due to a leaky windshield. I replaced the PCM at dealership prices ($500 or so) and went on my merry way. This also seemed to clear up the on again off again odometer. Next up shortly after that was a bad COP. I bought a new COP from the dealer for a bill and rolled up my sleeves. With FTE posts in hand I tackled the job of changing all the plugs and the bad COP. I had 176k miles, so I thought it was time and the plugs confirmed it when I pulled them. I paid a local mechanic $150 to do the the job the first time at 100k miles. The dealership wanted around $500 for the job, so that's why I decided to tackle it myself. Things didn't go so well, so I coasted the beast down the hill to a local shop and paid them to go behind me and tighten everything down. That was a couple of months ago. Last Sunday I was heading home and I heard a loud pop under the hood. Turns out I had blown a plug clean through the COP. So here I am, looking at used engines on eBay and trying to figure out what to do because I don't have any faith in the engine anymore.
You will find threads concerning everything I have discussed here from the leaky windshield to the blown plugs and everything in between. This forum is invaluable imho. Read it wisely and you should make it the next 100k miles relatively painlessly. After that, you're on your own. I was shooting for 200k miles, but I don't think I'll make it.
Hey soory about blowing the plug but seriously I would consider just repairing the threads and pressing on. The torque on these plugs is critical due to the lack of threads. I think the shop you took it to should have some responsibility in the blown plug if in fact they did that one. Threadsert makes an awsome repair kit for the 5.4l. As for the Ebay auction I have bought and slod many items on Ebay and would stay clear of the auction for the engine. With the seller asking for a core fee and also not fessing up the vin something is fishy, stolen maybe? but looks like a sale for a junk yard. In the tranny picks you can tell it has been sitting out of a vechile for awhile. Also neither looks like a 5,000 mile motor at all. 5k would look almost clean with all the factory inspection and tubing stickers still in place. Stay away.
Also, the guage cluster looks to be removed from a vehicle, or maybe is still sitting in the vehicle that is chopped a part. It definately isn't from a 99. Maybe a 97-98, but definately not a 99.
Not to mention, $1800 is kinda steep. It seems if you dig around in salvage yards you can find low mile 5.4L's, for several hundred dollars less. I've known guys to get them between $800 (11,000 mile 2001) to $1500 (4000 mile 2003) and anywhere in between. The only one I've heard of paying more, was a 6 mile engine (2000 Expi got totalled driving it off of the transporter, how I'll never know). These are all P.I. engines. One tip I've been given, is look for Econoline vans. They have the same engine, but don't seem to demand as much money, for what ever reason.
