Hi guys! Been a while since i last posted here. Well new news before my question. I just recently bought this 02 ranger. its a 3.0 5 speed. it has replaced my 87 ranger 2.9 on the daily grind duties. i still own the 87, i can never part ways with it, but it has been retired from active duty. anyways.....
my question is actually 2 of them. one is my 02 i just discovered i can shift the gears without pressing the clutch. it still needs the clutch pushed down to start and stop, etc. just not to shift the first 4 gears. 5th needs the clutch. i know this is not normal, but should i be worried? i still press the clutch when i shift cuz thats what ur supposed to do.
the second question is when i shift into 2nd i can feel the stick rock alittle when i accelerate. is this normal or should i be worried?
Ability to shift w/o the clutch is normal and works best if you match the engine speed to the tranny input shaft speed. It's also hard on the syncros so if you make it one of your regular driving habits, you can plan on tranny work. Save this shifting method for emergency only, such as a failure of the clutch hydraulics.
The rocking of the stick is just a torque reaction on the engine and tranny; provided it's not excessive it's nothing to worry about.
