Positive Traction advice

I have 73 F100 390, C6 AT, PS, PB, AC. I am rebuilding the engine and expect close to 400 hp when done. I plan on a 4.1 gear rear end and 32" tires...gives me a little over 3000 rpm at 70 mph in 3rd. Jacked up, when I rotate 1 tire the other tire rotates opposite. I believe that means I don't have any type of limited slip. I want to put some kind of limited slip/positive traction rear end. I've never done any rear end work before. The chunk bolts in from the front. I think that means I have a 9" ford. In doing research I've completely baffled myself on what to buy and where to go to get it. I think that I need to 1. figure out the splines I have...28, 31, or 35, 2. get whatever positive traction unit for a 9" ford with the right # of splines that I want, 3. get the 4.1 gears, & 4 assemble properly. I've been told a Detroit Locker is the best but from what I've read maybe it's not that good for an everyday driver. Can anyone offer advice on how best to figure out what to get and where to get it?

Oops...also forgot to mention...I'm on a budget...inexpensive is good...lol.

Thanks,

Tracy

first step is based on what you do with the truck. Mainly offroading? ?Daily driver? Towing?
Your budget is a big factor. How cheap are you looking to go?

It's mainly a daily driver. I like performance. I figure with the engine at close to 400 hp and a 4.1 gear that if I get on it it's just gonna smoke one tire unless I do something about the rear end. The gears are about $125 from Summit. The installation kit is about $90. I'd like to keep my total cost to less than $500. Honestly, at this point, if I could take the truck in and get the 4.1 and positive traction done for $500 and not have to worry with it I'd do it.

Bite the bullet and put in the Detroit Locker. Search for it on google and you'll find plenty of places that sell them. Do this right and you'll only do it once.

Yes, you will have to pull an axle to determine your spline count, but that's like a 30 min job including hunting for a long bolt, nut and washers and a piece of pipe to make a slide hammer out of.

I'd look at the Detrout Truetrac. Gear driven Posi unit, no clutches to wear out. In TX, you shouldnt have to worry about snow & ice, so a locker would work too if you can live with the quirks they exhibit on the street.

9" 3rd Member

I recently purchased a complete rebuilt 9" 3rd member with new 3.73 ring and pinion gears with limited slip from a guy out in CA. It cost $450 plus $80 shipping(it weighs about 80 lbs). It is the way to go to replace the entire 3rd member, all backlash and gear alignments are done. All you need to do is contact this guy at vshforlife8741@earthlink.net and tell him what you want. I got mine in a week after he received my check.
