I have a 2002 V6 Explorer without the tow package. I would like to put on a 2" hitch to tow our 1500# pop-up. Reese has a 2" class III/IV that mounts under the OEM 1.25" but is it possible for me to get Ford to swap the 1.25 for the 2" OEM? Which would be better?
defintely the bigger one would be better, but I don't know if you would notice it. The 1.25" has a capacity of 3500#, which leaves 2000# for loading other stuff in the popup. I guess I just don't see the point of upgrading the hitch if you're at less than 50% capacity?
However, the 2" would be a much better impact absorber in an accident than the 1.25" hitch.
I need to go with a 2" since all my draw bars fit this. MY question, should I go with the 2" reese or can I get Ford to swap the hidden hitch and convert to a two inch?
The factory Class III/IV would look a lot better than piggybacking another hitch under your Class II, but price/labor costs might make it a poor choice. Does that pop-up have electric brakes? 1.25" drawbars aren't that expensive.
>The factory Class III/IV would look a lot better than piggybacking another hitch under your Class II,<
My thoughts exactly. To me it looks like bolt off and bolt new one on but I may be looking at it wrong.
After getting a price on the factory Class III/IV (and letting your heart rate settle back to normal), you may decide to stick with the Class II. Good luck whichever way you go!
