Question Which eng/trans combo?

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum but have really enjoyed it so far.
Here is my question, I recently sold my F-250 so that I could down size to a ranger for fuel economy. Is there any motor/trans that you would stay away from? I'm currently looking at a 88-91 ranger ex-cab 2 or 4 wheel drive. I once owned a 83 chevy s-10 with the 2.3L v-6 that was a pile of junk.

If you want worthwhile economy, get a 2.3L SuperCab. I average 25 mpg's and I gun the heck out of it at times. Mine is a 94 model, btw.

Or, if you need some power, get a 4.0L. Highway mileage will be decent and as good as the 3.slow without the lack of power. That 4.0L is 90-later model option.
