im losing my memory!

i have an xtreme sound deck in my 87 ranger, which performs great. but if i dont turn it off before i start the pickup. 90% of the time it will lose its memory when i start the pickup.to hook it up i just used one of the wally world kits so it will plug into the factory harness. this same radio has been swaped into and out of my highboy too, so i know its not in the pickup. if thouht about the possibility of adding a small capacitor from radio shack but not sure if it would solve the problem.
thanx,
matt

If your losing your memory the problem is most likely going to be the constant power wire. The wiring harness, or some connnector might be loose and come undone sometimes. It might be easiest to splice in another wire direct from the battery (with an inline fuse of course) to the constant (battery) wire on the head unit. That should solve your problem. Either that or your head units going bad. Good luck.

Could be that when you start the truck, all that current goes to starting it; leaving the +12V memory wire with little or no voltage thus the 'losing' of memory.

If you have a volt meter, take a voltage reading on the constant wire. It should not fall below 10 volts when starting, if it is, then there could be a number of problems. A quick fix would be the capacitor.
