I make my own boxes and some for my friends, and i was wondering if anybody had any good ways to mount the carpet on the box. I normally get the automotive roll carpet from autozone. The glueing part i have down i use headliner glue on the carpet and contact cement on the MDF and it bonds really well, but i have a hard time making the corners look good, ive tried recessing the sides, but it still didnt look all that good. Any ideas or tips??
For mine I recessed the sides about an inch so that the 4 sides all had a nice wrap around. It just takes time to cut and slice the carpet when you wrap around the corners. I then cut the excess carpet off after I wrapped it around, and use another piece for the flat area within the recess itself.
Basically it takes something like a 30 to 45 degree cut in the fabric at the corner so that they will lay flat after you wrap them around. You could also take another piece of MDF and wrap that in carpet, and set that in the recessed area (screw it down) and that will help cover the corners as well. When I made my own box, I used the additional MDF trick on the front since I needed legs to make up for the hump in my Ranger. It turned out very nice.
