I have a vibration in the rear of my vehicle (04 F-150 FX4 CREW) that occurs when I make a turn from a standstill. I believe it is the Clutch- Paks in the rear end. I brought the truck in for the problem and they told me that there is no fix for the problem from Ford. They told me they would call me when the fix is given to them by Ford in the next few weeks. Well, this was over two months ago and I still had not recieved a call from the dealer. (I have been patient because the vibration was really not that bad.) Today I called the dealer and they said there was still not a fix and to make a long story endless, we got into an argument and next week they will look at the truck and see what they can do. I am at my end with this issue because the truck is now vibrating from a standstill very badly. I towed a 7000# boat with it this past weekend and it felt like the rear of the truck was going to fall off!
I do have a question for anyone who has knoledge of the Clutch-Pak issue.
Does anyone know if there is a TSB or recall for the problem. I went on the NHTSA website and their search of TSB's and recalls is not working properly.
Thanks in advance for any info and sorry for the painfully long post!
Sounds like they're confusing the driveline vibe (still no fix) with your actual problem w/ the clutch packs.
The first step for the clutch packs is to add a friction modifier to the fluid. If that doesn't work, replace the clutch pack assy. This has been done to many vehicles and is one of the original complaints when the truck first came out.
Note that the redesigned clutch packs a said to be smaller than the original design, so that could be "not so good" some miles down the road.
Do a search on this issue and you'll find alot of hits. BTW, you DO have a LS diff, right? (just checking!).
I'm assuming you have a limited slip differential. I have an 04 FX4 Scab that does a very similar thing. When pulling out of my driveway (a left turn) and the vehicle is cold, the rear seems to grab and shudder a bit, but only when cold.
I also noticed when the streets are wet, I get slight wheelspin when turning from a stop. Even when barely touching the accelerator. Sounds like clutch packs too.
Thanks for posting this, I'll keep checking this thread for more info.
Good luck
TSB 04-17-05 addresses this (limited slip axel chatter during low speed turning, left or right. I'd go to another dealer if possible. I took mine in and they knew right away what it was. Good Luck!
But anyways. I just replaced the clutch packs on my XLT this past week. I am a Lincoln Tech and did the work myself. The latest TSB# is 04-24-04. It is a revision to TSB# 04-17-05. The NHTSA and other websites usually give there own version of a TSB# such as the #17466 that Chinstar listed above. Ford does give SSM's (Special Service Messages) similar to that #17466 that sometimes eventually turn into TSB's. But all TSB #'s are of the 04-24-04 format. If you go to a dealer with any other format and ask to see a TSB for it you will only recieve a blank stare.
The original friction plate surface is entirely covered with friction material on both sides. The new plates had three or four friction areas on each side. The fluid changed from 75W90 to 75W140 synthetic with 4 ounces of Ford XL-3 friction modifier. Axle had a really bad shudder before, but is entirely gone now.
I understand the tag is not for me Don. LOL, I hope. The guys at work have been calling me Troll for years. I get all the latest and greatest info from Ford on a daily basis, and try to help out when I can. I dont concentrate on the Ford stuff as much as I do the Lincoln/Mercury side of it. Having the new F150 has drawn me here, so I will be around to help when I have the Info someone is looking for.
I had the same rearend shudder. Talked to a mechanic and a dealership nearby and he said Ford was replacing the entire rearend on the 4 or 5 trucks that have come in. No additives or replacing the clutch packs.
As I said before, I had the shudder and now I have 10600 miles on my truck I have noticed that the last several weeks the shudder has disappeared. Maybe I am going nuts but it isn't there anymore.
I will keep my fingers crossed it doesn't come back.
I had the same problem back in July. The dealership knew exactly what the problem was and had it fixed in 3 hours! They replaced the clutch pack and added synthetic fluid to it and that seemed to fix it. I also heard this is a problem in mainly F-150's that were made in Feb. and March.
My truck has just started with this shudder, 04 fx4 3.55. The only time I feel it is when the truck is cold. I'll give the dealer a call. One of you all said they swapped the whole rear out, wounder if I could talk them in putting 3.73's back in her?
