need to replace my 2.9L

Its toast, the trucks an 88 ranger 5 speed 4x4. Since its fuel injected can i use the 4.0L or a 3.8L still with the 2.9's computer? if it takes replacing the computer ill just get another 2.9L. Now as far as the bell housings go are they compatible?

My dad is looking at an 85 bronco II 4x4 with a blown 2.8 mated to a 5 speed...what would it take to mount the 2.3 to the drivetrain thats behind the existing 2.8? Other than engine mounts.

the 4.0 swap is very easy dont let the computer thing scare you you can usually get the motor, harness, and computer at a reasonable price from a salvage yard especially since so many exploders had the 4.0's this swap is very easy and the extra power from a 4.0 is quite a bit more than the ole 2.9.

Or this would be the time for a V-8

ive got a 1990 f150 5.0L 5 speed with 9" lift-6suspension and 3 body-...i just need to get the ranger running and sold...asap. I was thinking 3.8 or 4L because its more of a selling feature than a 2.9.

Your only options as far as the bellhousing go are the 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0. Computer has to match the engine. As for your dad's Bronco, if you wanted to replace the 2.8 with a 2.3, you would have to replace the bellhousing as well. The bolt pattern looks the same, but it's not. Different spacing on the bolts, starter on opposite sides, etc. I'd stay with the 2.8, unless you were maybe planning to put in a 2.3 Turbo motor. -TD

alright perfect thanks, I think ill just pop another 2.9L in my ranger and sell it. As far as the bronco goes, its carbuerated so that makes life easier and I will let him decide what to do now that he knows what needs to be done for the 2.3 to go in.
