Question 97 auto tranny questions

I have the chance to pick up a 97 Explorer 4x4 XLT for a good price, with 81k miles. It has the 4.0L OHV, overall good condition. My only concern was the way the tranny shifts. It shifts through all gears, but seems to have some delay when upshifting. Seems like it takes a little longer than normal between gears. Don't notice any slipping. I have always owned manual transmissions so I need a little help here
Is this common for the auto's in the explorers? Is it a sign of a beginning to a big problem? The owners says he followed maintanence shedule and has reciepts. Just looking for some advice here...
Thanks..

First thing to check is the tranny fluid... is it brown and have a burnt smell? If so, then the trans service has never been done... or it has been a long time since it was done. If so, then there could be major problems down the road. If memory serves... the 97 Explorer has a 4R55e trans... which is basically an updated A4LD (which are very prone to problems). If the tranny fluid looks and smells ok, then I would have it taken to a mechanic you trust prior to buying the truck.... who wants to get a good deal on a car and have to dump a couple thousand dollars on a new trans.... let us know what you find and we'll hopefully be able to guide you in your decision.

The 97 is actually using a 5R55E which is the electronic overdrive version of the 4R.
