Question Truck Driver's, Law Enforcement Officials & Smart people with a thing for math. HELP!

I need to know a mathimatical equation.

If there was a loaded tractor-trailer weighing 80,000 pounds traveling at 45-50 miles per hour.

How many feet will it take to stop that rig with all brakes locked up, driving over a curb, & dragging a 1998 Ford Taurus under the trailer?

This paticular tractor-trailer has 1 steer axle, 2 drive axles, & 3 trailer axles.

Idunno, but many soccer moms and college students believe it to be about 7-8 feet. Because that's how close they will pull out in front of you and then slam on their brakes in order to switch lanes.

I had someone try to take a short cut under my trailer this afternoon. Fortunatly no body was injured but him & I were both shook up.

Police & DOT was there & conducted their investigation but it will be a few days for me to get the report. I have to have a report turned in by 7 a.m. local time in the morning about the incident. I like to be detailed as best as I can.

I could go measure the black tracks but it is dark out, will be dark out at that time in the morning. And I don't feel like being on the 65 mph highway on foot at night.

I am the Vice President of a trucking company, and I agree with this statement.

The vast majority of our nations truck drivers are extremely professional, and thus the vast majority of accidents between autos and commercial trucks are the fault of the auto driver, not the commercial truck driver. (79 percent per the most recent Federal DOT publications).

You would not beleive the stupid things our truck drivers put up with on a daily basis. They truly are heros for the thankless job they do for our nation.

I know the answer to your question, but I will not give it to you. From the tone of your question, it sounds like you are trying to sue some poor truck driver for an accident that was not his fault. And I have a problem with that.

thats kind of a loaded question. it depends on road surface, road conditions(wet,dry,ect..) what kind of load was the truck hauling(evenly loaded or bulky) even down to the type of tires on the truck. too many possiblities involved to give an answer from the information given. its a science to figuring that kind of thing out. not what you were wanting to hear im sure but its the truth

Reread his post - he is the truck driver. He's filling out his own report.

Obviously you haven't read none of my posts. I'm probally one of the biggest truck drivers on this site. I wonder if I can sue myself?

Your right.

New pavement just a couple weeks old.
Dry
Hauling Class 5
Tires? Most likely flat spoted right now.

I'm just looking for a estimate figure to see if it ads up to what I would think it would. I can get the exact figures later. For my accident report, I need a estimate that will put me close.

No, I have not seen your posts. And your original post did not identify you as the trucker.

Sorry. Give Lew a call. He is on the side of truckers.

That is one way of putting it. I saw it was about to happen so I did eveything that I could do to try and steer away from it. Including putting my own life in danger.

I ended up ditching my truck & coming back up in on coming traffic. That is when I looked and saw I was dragging him under my trailer. I manuvered quickly & ditched it again taking him with me (that should explain the curb) to aviod another accident at the same time.

Witnesses said if I would have never swerved. I would have T-boned the car & possibly taken the driver's life. State Patrol said they are surprised about my driving skills.
