Hey guys, just want to get eveyone's opinion on them. Personally, I don't like them. Sure they flow more air, but they flow more dirt too. Trust me. My dad bought a cold air intake for his 02 Dakota. It came with a K&N type filter. After about 15,000km on it, he pulled the intake off to see what kind of a job it was doing. The entire intake had a visible layer of dirt inside. After that, I'm sold; I'll never have one on my truck.
I agree 100%. My wife bought an 04 Trailblazer, and factory filters are about $30, Wix or Napa are about $20, so I strarted checking and bought an Airaid. I just put it in, but belonging to a oil and filter board there seemed to be a pretty positive feedback on them.
In fact she traded an 02 Dakota in on her Trailblazer, I had installed a K&N in it and one day I was changing the plugs, and of course you have to remove the air box and I couldn't believe my eyes. The trottle body was just loaded with dirt and crud. I went back to a paper filter, not long after she traded it in.
I love them, had them in all my vehicles. Never had a dirt problem before. The only thing that happened when I installed mine was better power and mpg.
I've put the FIPK on an 87 Supra, an 87 Supra TURBO, a 98 Expedition, and a 2000 Crown Vic, and I've never seen any dirt problem whatsoever. All of the kits did make all of the cars noticeably louder. The Supras gained about 2 highway mpgs. The Crown Vic went from 22 highway to 26.5 highway. The expedition was just a typical expedition and saw no improvement, but, then again, it's also got 3" straight pipes from the cats back, so I just can't keep my foot out of it.
I had a K&N filter in my 97 f350, it improved to milage slightly. I to was getting dirt bypassing the filter until I found out it was not installed correctly. I was taking the filter out and cleaning & reoilling it but was forgetting to put a layer of gun grease around the rubber seal before reinstalling it. After I started greasing it up again, the dirt bypass stopped

I have a FIPK on my '00 SD, have had it for 4 years and still running strong. I get crappy gas mileage anyways (8-9mpg) so I just wanted it for the sound and ease of cleaning.
