How To Get Timing Belt Out- Next Step After Crankshaft Pulley Removal?!!
Posted this message before with no response. 94 Ranger with 2.3 liter. I've been following the Haynes manual on replacing the timing belt. I got all the way down to the step on removing the crankshaft pulley and have completed that. It then says "remove outter timing belt cover", which was already stated a few steps prior to removing the crankshaft pulley...so do they mean the inner timing belt cover? I can't see how to get the belt out as there is a metal belt "guide" near the crankshaft pulley mount and the crankshaft pulley mount also appears to be in the way. What exactly do I have to do after removing the crankshaft pulley in order to free the belt??? I know I need to release the belt tensioner too but I'm still trying to figure out what else needs to be removed to give the belt room to come out. Does the "inner" timing belt cover and the belt guide come out because it looks like it's all behind the various pulleys, and do I have to remove the crankshaft pulley mount and if so how??? Please HELP as I want to get this girl back on the road.
How To Get Timing Belt Out- Next Step After Crankshaft Pulley Removal?!!
This is from the 1989 Ford manual for the 2.3 but it should be the same. I skipped the first part since you have done it.
6) Remove water pump.
7) Remove crankshaft pulley.
8) Remove timing belt outer cover.
9) Loosen belt tensioner pulley assembly.
10) Remove timing belt.
Hope this helps you get herr back on the raod, good luck. If you need anything else feel free to email me but the 2.3 is not an engine that I'm familar with.
How To Get Timing Belt Out- Next Step After Crankshaft Pulley Removal?!!
Finally figured it out. Haynes really screwed up the last few steps. After you remove the crankshaft pulley you must remove the crankshaft pulley's mount on the crankshaft (might need a pulley puller). Once this is off you'll see a big washer behind it which won't come off because the crankshaft sensor is in the way. Simply wiggle this washer as far forward as possible on the crankshaft and the wiggle the old belt out and the new one on. Took me two days to figure this out. Now I have another question. I put on the new belt and the cam and crankshaft timing marks line up perfectly after firing up the engine. However, the evil Haynes manual says that some 2.3s must line up the auxillary pulley with it's own timing mark on the engine. Since I moved this pulley by accident I'm worried that it's not where it should be. I have a 94 2.3 with a manual tranny. This Haynes manual says that "Federal manual models" don't need this pulley lined up. What's a "Federal" model? They also list others in obscure language that you'd need a lawyer to figure out. Can anybody tell me what the deal is?
