Does anyone know what type of engine damage could be done driving with a "bad" cam position sensor and synchro unit? The check engine light has gone off (96 4X4 4.0 liter) and after paying the dealer $100 to read the computer screen and tell me what the error code means (yes I know I should buy a scanner!) they then wanted to violate me for $900 to replace the sensor and synchro unit (5hrs of labour). I told them to reset the code and I will see if it goes off again(this has happened before). The last time it went off was seven months ago and it didn't go off again until this weekend (it was really hot here and I wonder if that could have had anything to do with it. Has anyone replaced these parts by themselves? The parts are only $200 it is the removal of the intake that I don't really want to do but for $900 I can put up with the hassle I guess. How much damage could be done driving this way? I mean the engine is still running fine(power and mileage are good)
it shouldn't damage anything, although the gear that drives the oil pump is on the bottom ot the syncronizer.( just like a distibutor)
It's been awhile since I did one, but I don't remember pulling the intake to do it. I do remember it was a PITA to get adjusted afterwards. There are some timing marks in the little clear window that I rolled up on the old one and reinstalled the new one in the same position. Seems to me I used a mirror to be able to see them better. $900 does sound steep to do all this, but like I said before, it is a PITA. Hope this helps, Later, Rick
