I just changed my tranny fluid on my E40D(2001 Expi, 5.4L) Everything was going smoothly...dropped pan, drained fluid, cleaned the magnet, replaced filter, put it all back together, then drained torque converter(my girlfriend bumped it seriously like 100 times before the bolt lined up). I got about 15 quarts out. Here is my question...once i get all this out, filling the pan is easy, but how does the torque converter get filled again?? Upon starting my car after i put fluid back in, I put it in drive, and it didnt go anywhere! Reverse, nothing! I sat there going from gear to gear reving the car until finally it started to roll. Then i topped it off, and after going from gear to gear for about 15 mins, it seemed ok to drive. Took it out for a spin and it was barely moving, after driving for about 10 miles, it finally started driving normal again. Took it home, topped it off again, and now its driving totally fine. Did i do any damage getting the ATF to flow back through the tranny system in this fashion? The car runs and feels totally noraml right now, but i was nervous as hell when i first put in gear.
They usually take a mile or two for the pump to get fluid in all the valves and such. My only thought is, did you change the seal on the filter tube and make sure the old one was out? I should be driving like normal after the (hot) top off of fluid.
Yep, i made sure that little orange seal was removed from the old filter, and the new one fit up in there properly. Its driving perfectly now, i just got nervous when i started going through the gears and couldnt even get it down off the ramps! That was a messy job, not sure i will do that one again myself...
Yep, it takes a while for everything to recirculate. I think the technical procedure is to fill with a few quarts, start the vehicle, cycle through the gears, then fill with more fluid, etc. etc. until you've replentished the 14 or 15 quarts.
FWIW, instead of "bumping" the engine several times and hoping for a good alignment of the drain bolt, you can turn the engine over by hand using a large socket on the crankshaft bolt. Believe it or not, when I did mine a while back, I had my wife bump the key and the drain bolt aligned perfectly with the hole the very first try.
Hi,
Another option when empting the fluid from the tech converter instead of bumping the starter is: bump the starter until you can see the plug then take a screw driver and rotate the converter til the plug is aligned so you can unscrew it easily. The converter moves quite easily.
When refilling after the converter has been drained you should be able to add 6-8 quarts then start the engine and rotate through the gears slowly then add the rest of the fluid (usually between 14-15 qts).
