The oil light frequently comes on and stays on after turning off the engine. The only way to make it go out is to restart then shut off engine.
The vehicle is a 78F100 302/C6.
Thanks
John
I'm thinking that the ignition switch would have to be in the run or start possition for the oil light to be on. Does it go off if you were to turn the key on and off with out starting the engine? May help to check out a wiring schematic. Hope this helps.
Rick
The light remains on even when the key is turned from the off to run position and back again. It goes out only after starting the engine. Debris in the sending unit makes sense as it is a high mile engine.
Thanks for the replies.
The oil pressure sending unit and light should only have power when the key is in the RUN position. There is a wiring error somewhere. Wiring diagrams are available at the online store. Has someone installed some aftermarket gauges or a radio etc?
Next time it is on, remove the wire from the sender and see if it goes off. If it does not, then ground the wire and look again. If it is still on you have a sneak circuit to find. This would worry me until I found the problem - something is not right and you can not trust your oil pressure light to tell you if you have a oil problem.
All,
It takes two thing to light your "Idiot light".
1. No oil pressure. This could happen when the motor isn't running? That could be one of the times there is no oil pressure?
2. Power to light the bulb. Usually power for the instrument panel comes from the ignition switch. If you turn the ignition switch off and the light stays on, then there is something wrong with the switch.

How many Ford truck owners does it take to fix a light?
Same thing with my 1979 f100 wiyh 302. The dash crumbled. Its not hard to change and I got one from salvage. Take it with you the numbers and letters are important that on the part.
Thanks for the replies....I'll check the 14 pin connector at the back of the gauges for cleanliness and tightness. If that doesn't solve the problem I'll move on to the spare ig switch. I'll post back with results, if any.
Related to Million's note about idiot light vs. gauge pin connectors: is there a way, without too much fuss, to change over to a "smart" dash" (gauges) when your harness connector is setup for idiot lights?
Ooops, I guess it has been a while since posting from this location....
