roof top bags
Has anyone had any experience with roof top bags for luggage? Right now I have 3 different options:
1) Sears has a hard box that can go on the crossbars (I think it has about 20 cubic feet of space)
2) Wally World has a roof top bag (about 15 cubic feet), but how would I tie it down without anything on the sides to attach to?
3) I already have a rack to put in the hitch, so I could get a bag that fits in my rack. I have also seen it at Wally World (about 10 cubic feet).
I think I want to get either the hard box by itself or the roof top bag and the hitch bag (I can get both of these cheaper than the hard box). But the question remains as to attaching the roof top bag without side bars.
Please help me...
My .02:
Wally World bags are fine as long as you get no rain. I have used the Axxius (sp?) several times and it works very well but is VERY limited in it's weatherproofness. I normally put suitcases etc. in trash bags then put that in the bag. Tie down system included seems to work well, however, I have a Yakima LoadWarrior that I use when using the bag. I would think it would work fine with the factory roof rack though.
I also have a hitch rack and the same observations above apply except that it is much easier to bungee stuff securely.
Hard cases are much better from a weatherproof standpoint and slightly easier to load. It does help if you are using soft-sided luggage. They also can be locked for overnight security if you stop on the road.
I tend to use different combination depending on where and for how long we're going. Beach - soft bag with bike carrier in receiver, mountains - hard case with bike carrier in receiver, long trip - hard case, bikes on top in Yakima rails, no hitch case. Of course this can change if we take the trailer!
Can you tell we take a LOT of stuff when we leave home? Hope this helped.
The wife doesn't want to spend any more money on bags, so for the hitch rack, we're just going to get a couple of rubbermaid tubs and strap them on good.
