turning up the fuel

Hi guys, Im changing head gaskets this weekend and wanted to turn up the fuel alittle BUT i dont have a pyrometer the truck does not smoke when pulling 6000 lb trailer or when empty. I know by reading some post to only go a flat at a time. should I turn it up one flat a half flat or wait till i get a pyro. I did open up intake air flow and exhaust. thanks

I'd invest in a pyro before you do anything captjohn. If nothing else think of it as a cheap investment toward the longevity and reliability of your motor.

i have an old 7.3...before we put the turbo on it, i turned it up 3 flats and didnt have any guages or anything....pulled some decent loads with it and it didnt melt anything enough to make it stop running....all those old diesels smoke some when they are cold....mine shoots a little white smoke most of the time...even when warm...they might not have too much power but they will run for a long long time
