hi my name is garrett and i just picked up a 79 fullsize bronco. upon getting it i went to town 3" suspension lift painted it 33x12.5" tires new big bumpers a winch some fog lites and a few other neat little doodads.
now heres the problem the guy who had it before me put in a new high power coil made a buncha of backyard mods (i.e jerry rigged wiring and some tacky gauges which ive replaced with nice ones etc). now ive also got another bronco an 84 both with the 351w sitting here i dont remeber exactly the 84's throttle body, but i know the 79 is the 351w 2brl mod setup, but heres the kicker she only hits 3500rpms with the peddle to the floor the 84 tops out at 6700rpms and the motors not being to far off from each other i think this to be a problem.
does anyone have any insight as to why my rpms are so low and or how to fix it? i was thinking it may have a rev limiter on it, but from what i understand that could be anywhere on the truck in anything almost and basically like tryin to find a needle in a haystack. someone please tell me im wrong and help me figure this out.
I'm not totally sure, but first of all, I think your rpm's are ok for a 2brl with 33's and no gears on it. It's probably ******* because of stock gears. It's the 6700rpm's I'd worry about...I may be wrong, but I know I'd jump out if my Bronco started hitting 6700 rpms
i would also double check because i dont believe that the 351w was available in the 79 bronco. I think your 79 has the 351M . these are two totally different engines. like jdmorg said gears would help, run a compression test to see where your at. also check timing and maybe needs a tune up. also the tranny might need servicing.
yep, unless the motor was swapped it is a 351M or 400. If you have stock gears. Probably 3.55, then there is your issue. My 78 when it had a 351M, C6 and 3.55 gears if it hit a tough obstacle you could floor it and it would try and try but not get to 4K. I burned up two trannys that way. I have a manual now and 4.10s. The manaul worked well with the 3.55 gears as well. The auto trans just have to work to hard to do any thing with the old gears.

well knowing that the rmps sound about right is a bit more comforting and as far as the 6700rmps go that is a different bronco i used in comparision to my other 79 my 84 will hit 6700, but i dont drive that one. thanks though

late
so after i read this it spiked my curiosity. i went out and after some climbing around and digger through dirt i found that tha valve cover i looked at inniatialy isnt the original. so i got down and got the numbers off the block and looked it up and lo and behold it is a 351m. i havent had much chance to check the timing cuz my dad borrowed my timing gun like 2 months ago and hasnt returned it to me yet. and the tranny runs and shifts smooth as glass so i believe the tranny to be sound but a tune up and a check never hurts

i would love to conver it over to a manuel, but i dont know anywhere to pick up a manuel tranny and or what kind to get i know how to swap it out just no where to get it. also this truck doesnt see a whole lot of offroading a lil here and there when i get bored, but mainly driving back and fourth to work so id prolly lean toward a 5 speed, but i dont know. any insight?
MBK, are you talking about revving it in neutral or park or are you actually driving your Bronco at 6700 RPM?
this was a comparison between two totall different broncos one being an 84 with the 351w and the one i dirve now being a 79 with the 351m the windsor would hit 6700 when i mashed it to the floor in park or neautral but under load usual topped out at 5 grand. my 79 which im not as satisfied with in park or neautral or drive will not break 3500.
ok, that is a differant issue. You need to check the timeing, throttle cable, air cleaner. you should be able to rev it out over 6k. Not a good I dea on this motor though. It works very well at low RMPs, but stock should not be rev over 4k for to long.
as for the manaul tranny the NP435 came stock and are a dime a dozen as most people do not like the granny gear, but it sure comes in handy off road. I can live with the 1.1 4th gear.
There is not much about the 78 79 broncos I don't know about so feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions.

i bought a 72 pickup once and it wouldnt run but about 50 mph -- checked everthing -- when i went to replace carb i found bolt missing where bracket for throttle linkage bolted to intake missing and only let me have about half pedal -- put in new bolt and no more problem -- just something you might check
