I have seen some paint kits for coloring the calipers. I like the idea for an inexpensive upgrade. Has anybody done this done this to their truck? Does the color last? Looking for pictures too.
I painted mine. Picked up a can of racing red caliper paint from AutoZone for around $8.
I've got a couple pics in my gallery...they don't show the calipers all that well, but you'll get the idea. For some reason the red looks orangeish in the pictures - it's not. The color matches the red in the Fx4 logo so I think it ties in to the paint scheme of the truck pretty well...
It was easy to do. I just jacked my truck up and removed one wheel at a time. I covered the entire side of my truck and wheel well with a plastic drop cloth so airborne paint wouldn't hit my truck. Then I took a couple of old TShirts and covered the rotors and axel area and packed the areas in between the caliper with fragments of a paper towel and used tape to mask off areas I didn't want to paint. Once that was done I simply sprayed them with 3 or 4 coats.
I had trouble getting the paint to stick in a few areas on the caliper because it didn't want to bond to the metal that well...I solved this problem as it dried by just taking a brush and spread it around a bit on the areas that weren't sticking well then continuted with the additional coats.
I did this about 3 months and 7000 miles ago and haven't had any troubles with flaking or chipping.
If you look close enough you can see what i did, i painted the whole rotor and calipers. It was pretty rusty before, so it helps if you look at yours then look what i have done ...With krylon high temp paint, "caliper" paint is just a name, go with high temp 500+ or something.
I must admit...painting the calipers was the first "modification" that I made to my 04 Supercrew Lariat 4X4. I went with a red plastic-coat paint (brush-on) which worked perfectly. I removed each wheel and carefully painted the calipers. I have nearly 2000 miles now and the paint has held up well. I get many comments and stares regarding the look. My rig is oxford white and the red calipers really add to the race truck look. Additionally, this personalizes my truck. I don't recommend that you do this...I want my truck to be different..ha ha ha...

Does applying paint to rotors affect their wear/efficiency? Seems like the paint would rub off too.
Painting the rotors and calipers is not something you would do if you were concerned about the efficiency of the the braking system. Paint holds in heat. Since I use my rig for towing, I wouldn't even consider painting the calipers. I'm more concerned with function over appearance.
