Sheared bolt/stud punctures oil pan!

This happened to my brother today on his '2000(?) Ranger. it's a chunk of bolt or stud with a nut on it and found it's way to a cranny between the oil pan and the frame. Engine movement eventually wore through the pan and he suddenly dropped all his oil. He says this thing definitely came from outside the engine, also says he thinks the truck was handling a bit wierd lately. Might be a suspension piece, not sure. He's looking but can't find the source. The threads are roughly 7/16" in diameter. Anybody else had this happen? He has a 100,000 mile warranty so he's interested in finding out where this thing came from. He travels a rough stretch of dirt road every day, so i'm thinking suspension too...or motor mount even?

I know its the base engine (4 cylinder), I'll have him check the exhaust studs.
