My 96 ranger , 4 cyl factory A/C works fine as long as you keep it on max cool. If you put it on just A/C control , it will hardly blow out the vents and not cool at all . When you put it back on max cool , it goes back to cooling.....I have been told locally that it may be a vaccum leak maybe . I want to take it to A/C shop but I would sort of like to have a little upfront knowledge of what the posibilities might be .....PLease help ....Thanks
That sounds like a broken blend door, see the link in the tech info thread at the top of this forum. MaxAC closes the valve in the heater hose, shutting of the hot coolant to the plenum.
Definitely sounds like a possible blend door issue. The "MAX AC" setting closes a valve that stops coolant from going to the heater core.
If it is your blend door, what is happening is that your AC is working and the air always goes past the condenser, but after being cooled it is being channeled past the heater core because your blend door is broken. Since MAX AC shuts the valve to the heater core, you get cool air in MAX because the heater core is not hot.
Do a search on blend door in this forum and you'll find plenty of threads about it and the fixes. It is a common problem on these trucks in those years.
I went out to check some of the things you were mentioning about the blender door and noticed the door on the vent where it blows out behind the shifter was closed tight . I could not move it at all. Did I understand , that door needs to be open to cool and all the way closed for Max heat ? Is that door I see the blender door ? Thanks in advance......
Oh ok . I do have a stick shift in my truck . Do you know what makes that door open and close ? I can not get it open at all . Does it work with the AC and heater system also ? Thanks again....
Are you talking about the vent just above the tranny tunnel? On my 2000 I have a console down there so mine has two vents, one to each foot well. Most of the doors, except blend door, are vacuum controled, if its not working check the vacuum line for that door.
Mine has the 5 speed transmission shifter , no console , but just in front of the shifter there is a vent and it blows out on each side at the bottom, to the driver and the passenger area. I think I need to look in to some more threads on here and determine how to get access to the blender door . Thanks a lot for all your replies.....
