Question '54 / '79 "Fordiac"

Guys,
I'm a relative newbie at this - with that said...
I've a '54 F100 with a '79 Pontiac 301 (Firebird) engine.

Recently summit went wrong w/ the alternator and the wires on it got burned up pretty good. So I got a replacement alternator and dropped it in. Since the wiring was soooooo bad to begin with (I'll post some photos if you like) I figgured I'd replace the wires at the same time - they was mostly burned up anyway.

So I got the wires out and was able to unravel MOST of the tape ect. and proceeded to make an duplicate copy of wiring I had just removed. The stuff I pulled out was a real mess. Absolute chaos.

The diagram below shows how the wiring was set up and what I copied, with the exception of the battery cable which was fine. The small posts on the selenoid have wires attached (not shown) which disappear into a jumbled mass rats nest of electrical / hockey tape so I aint sure yet where they go! The post for the battery also has some other leads attached to it at least one of which I know is for the electric fan.

So I fired up the truck - everything seemed OK until I turned the ignition off. I expected the engine to shut down but it kept on running! Finally it died after I pulled the clip outta the altenator. As it stands now I plugged the clip back in and disconnected the (blue-ish?) wire and the truck will shut down with the ignition. I've no idea if there is any charge going into the battery yet - it was 11:45 PM when I wrapped up.

Anybody got any suggestions?

Now that my radiator, carberator, timing, plugs, wires, disto, suspension, tires, brakes, waterpump, battery, transmission, steering and exhaust are squared away I was planning on doing the wiring next anyhow!

Thanx

The two small wires on a GM starter solenoid are marked 'R' and 'S'. The 'S' wire connects to the "start" side of the ignition switch and apparently that one is working or the starter would not be operating. The 'R' wire connects to the side of the ballast resistor going to the coil. If you are not running a ballast resistor you can just run the 'R' wire back to the ignition side of the switch (the side that is hot only when the switch is in the 'on' position). The alternator wiring depends on what kind of alternator you are running.
