my 88 I6 shows low oil pressure on the factory gauge, i was told to replace the pickup, i was also told to change to oil pump, and then someone told me if i change out the oil pump that bad things could start happening, does what these people say hold water or should i change out oil pump and pickup. the motor doesn't use any oil between oil changes and it doesn't knock or tick, it purrs like a kitten, any opinions?
mhg is right. When I put a gauge in my truck, I found pressure was 35 psi with the 30 weight I was running, but spec is 40-60 hot at 2000. Now I run 40 weight and get around 44 psi. Once you install the gauge, note the pressure when it is cold. Then you need to drive it 10 or 15 miles to get the oil hot before you consider the pressure reading.s at idle and at 2000 rpm.
i got the gauge, cold it runs 45 @ idle, 55 @ highway spd, after it warms up, it drops down to 30 @ idle occasionally, it stays @ 30 breifly then goes up to 40, highway spd it stays @ 55, should i be concerned with the 30 @ idle? thanks guys
plain old 30 wt, i was thinking about using 40 wt, this should be ok shouldn't it?, here in georgia it's blistering hot around this time, i thought maybe i'd go back to 30 wt in the winter. what ya'll think?
Broadly speaking, 30 weight includes 5w30, 10w30, and straight 30, but I think you mean straight 30. I really have no experience with straight weights. The European Redline oil site says that 20w50 is more or less a straight 30 oil with viscosity index improvers added to get the 50 rating. They indicate that the straight 30 already could pass the test for 20w. So, given that, you could try a 20w50. But the straight 40 probably would work fine too. Look at the chart in the Chilton's manual or an older manual and it will give you the minimum temp to run these oils at. I will hazard a guess that you don't want striaght 40 in there if it is colder than about 40 degrees F (or would that be 50 F), so you should be fine in the GA summer. But the 30 is giving you fine oil pressure so I don't see a pressing need to go thicker, unless under hard driving the pressure is dropping.
