Hello Again! I am so impressed with the response I got to my radiator fluid question I want to ask something in addition to that. I have an Expidition 2002 and three other older older vehicles I do my best to maintain myself. One of the most timeconsuming and seems like- money consuming maintenance items I do myself is brake work. I go to Pep Boys, Discount Auto parts, Napa and Auto Zone for pads and rotors depending on covenience. dealer parts just seem so steep! Question: Where do most- serious do it yoursefl maintenence mechanics get there their parts? I tell you what - I bought a rebuilt power steering pump from Napa about a year ago and it lasted a week! Who can you trust for rebiult stuff? is there anyway to avoid the markups at the dealer and still get good parts?
I use O'Reilly. I think their quality is generally better than Autozone. These are about the only options around Houston any longer (there are a couple Napas, but none within 20 miles of my house).
1) NAPA
2) O'Reillys/Discount Auto/PepBoys
3) Auto Zone
Most parts are either O'Reilly or Pep Boys...like Buzzard I don't have a NAPA w/in about 30 minutes...for oil/filters its usually Auto Zone for QS and a Motorcraft filter because I don't THINK Auto Zone can screw those up...
I use mostly AZ and Advance auto parts. I try to buy only new stuff when possible. I have had bad luck with rebuilds lasting only a short time, especially alternators. I have also seen new stuff break so......
The good part of that is the parts are warrantied for life of the car. So any future replacemnt is free with the exception of your time to do it. This is really cool for brake pads, alternators and other wearout items.
I avoid the dealer like the plaque. I really hate "dealer only" items. They should provide you some KY free of charge, cause you are gonna be sore when they are done. The dealer is generally 3x+ what you can buy aftermarket.
I get the Motorcraft oil and filters at Wal-mart. Can't beat the price.
