4x4 not disengaging completly
I have a 94 Explorer with 74,000 miles. When I switch from 4x4 to 4x2 there is a lound buzzing sound that increases its pitch with the speed. If I re-engage the 4wd it stops. It also stops if I drive a short distance in reverse. Is this harmful and can it be fixed?

You are supposed to back up 10 feet or so to disengage your front hubs. That is normal to make that buzzing sound, but don't keep driving it unless you unlock the front hubs. YOu will notice your gas mileage get bad as well.
