1.7 ratio roller rockers for 5.0 litre heads

I was offered some 1.7 ratio Crane roller rocker arms & I have flat top pistons.

Will I have a problem with valve clearance?

I drive an '89 Lincoln Town car, I am using heads off an '87 Ford F-150.

I realize this is a truck forum, but trust me, old men talking about their lincolns won't solve my problem. I need some real advice.

Talking I should clarify

I am also a member of a lincoln town car group, the members of that are more car enthusiests than mechicanically enclined.

I figure the people in this forum appear more mechanically knowledgeable, no offence to either groups.

My brother installed set of them on his 94 F-150 302 w/ an E303 roller cam without any problems. Dunno if the pistons are the same though.

1.7 roller rockers

i have the 1.7 roller rockers in my 351 w with flat top pistons. with stock push rods. as long as you have reliefs cut in the pistions(and most likely do) i can't see a problem. but confess i don't know for sure. i guess my question is, are the full roller rockers noisier than the orginal stamped steel rockers or roller tipped rockers?

I haven't put the roller rockers on yet. I am trying the cautious approach and find out before I ruin my valves.

Thanks for your help.

roller rockers

from what i've been told, there should be no problems, and i have had no problems with mine, except i think that they are noiser, and maybe i'm just too paranoid about the noise from mine, nobady seems to be able to tell me to my satisfaction, just how noisy the rockers and timing chian should be. wish ;you luck and you're welcome., p.s. one thing that i might try is to get a push rod length checker just to see if maybe the rods are no quite what they need to be. maybe!

I concur with superhooperduty on the pushrod length checker. Changing the rockers to 1.7 will change the geometry of the valvetrain and will need to be addressed.

glad you concur with me,about time someone did. just kidding, the shop i bought all my parts from, only builds Fords, but i have to admit they never even suggested that i might need to use such a device, i tried several different length rods in my 351w with the 1.7 rockers, the longer ones made it run much quieter. the shop just said "these will do" for the standard length rods. looking back, i think maybe they are a second rate shop, at least in my eyes.

Most 1.7 roller rockers are designed to be used in stock motors with no change in push rod length needed.

I would still check the pushrod length. I say it is better to be safe than sorry.

superhooper, yes I think they do make a little more noise, not anything really noisy though, not like the variable duration lifters.

mako, you can check your pushrods if that makes you happy, but 1.6 to 1.7 wont make enough of a difference.

It is his engine, not mine. I would check them if I were him. It does not harm anything to be re-assured that the valve train geometry is correct. The only thing it does is add a little extra time to the job if the geometry is correct, but if it is off, it can save him some headaches in the future.

Yeah, you can spend the money for a push rod length checker if you dont believe crane, compcam, harland sharp, etc... when they say that you dont need to! Oh well, whatever yanks your crank. Measure on mako man!

I called my local mustang shop and they couldn't tell me what effect it would have on my valve train geometry since they only deal with mustang, but his first advice was to check the rod length to ensure it will worked correctly, and consider longer rods to quite the valve train.
