Hello,

I checked the codes in my 1986 ranger with 135,000 miles and it said code 31 was the problem, which is:
EVP or PFE sensor – signal voltage is below minimum specs. OR
EVR solenoid circuit problems OR EGR valve is not in its normal closed position.

I bought a new EGR valve and cleaned out the intake manifold but did not change out the EVP sensor.

So how do I check/fix low voltage?? OR solenoid circuit problems??

My Chilton manual does not tell me how to check/fix these.
I’m a diesel mechanic and not too familiar with gas engines.

You should run the pinpoint test for the code to determine the exact cause, I can email them to you if you need them, below is a list of possible causes.
Possible Causes:
-- Improper vacuum.
-- Improper exhaust backpressure.
-- EGR valve.
-- EGR leakage.
-- Low or no EGR flow.
-- Wrong orifice.
-- EGR system components.
l Check vacuum hoses and connections for looseness, pinching, leakage, splitting, blockage and proper routing.
l Inspect EGR valve for loose retaining bolts or damaged flange gasket.

i have already Checked the following, vacuum hoses and connections for looseness, pinching, leakage, splitting, blockage and proper routing. and i have Inspected the EGR valve for loose retaining bolts or damaged flange gasket.
