Hello, My name is Marie and I was given a 1990 Ford Ranger XLT, by a friend. I have had minor problems, such as replacing the fuel filter and cleaning out the gas tank as truck sat for 3+years. And up until now has been a great truck.
Now the transmission is slipping. YES I check the fluid and I replace the filter and but in new fluid. But is still not shifting (is automatic and 4x4).
My question is, other than replacing the transmission, is there anything else I can to to try to fix it.
Try having the fluid changed completly and the converter. I don't think by 90 there were any adjustments. If I remember right into the early 90's Ford cars had some vacuum lines to the trans. Trucks probably had some too. If they come off or get old and crack, the trans won't work right. If you have alot of miles on the truck and you are going to keep it you might be prolonging the inevitable. Wish you luck.
