A friend of mine just changed his fuel filter on his Excursion and said it was a pain in the a$$ to seperate the filter from the cap. If a person has the factory filter, are the tabs easy to spot by the naked eye or does a person have to know what he is looking for? I am planning on changing mine tonight and am curious to get the info before I start. I don't want to pay ford the big bucks for a new filter so I was thinking about looking at NAPA or Schucks. About my only other options here. I have read that many fill the fuel bowl partially with Stanadyne. Would Diesel Kleen (grey bottle) serve the same/similiar purpose? I know the Stanadyne is lubrication only and DK includes a cetan boost. Any thoughts?
I changed my fuel filter on my '99 not too long ago and wonder the same question. I was trying to figure it out before I had the new filter. When I went to the parts shop to get a new one, I looked at it and it had the cap with it, which made things a lot easier. It was a Motorcraft filter. Don't know if that helps you any. I don't know what the factory filters are like, but I think I'll stick with the Motorcraft and not have to worry about popping the filter off the cap every time. If I can remember correctly, I think it cost me around $20 for the filter. Not sure how it compares to just the filter without the cap.
On my 99 the filter element was not attached to the lid. When I unscrewed the cap off the housing it was just sitting there. I've heard a hair bit about the one peace cap housings not sealing well letting fuel seap out the lid. Fact or fiction I don't know, but I'm staying with the original setup. I would think that if your filter is stuck to the lid you've got a one peace unit.
I tried to use a puralator fuel filter one piece(cap attached to filter) It would not seal. Fuel keep leaking from under the lid. I will never use anything but the factory lid again.
