It's been a while, but a long time ago I recorded a short message on my hard drive. I think it was a wave file. Can someone refresh my memory on how to record through the computer microphone and save the recording as a file??
Start button, All Programs, accessories, entertainment, sound recorder That should be the program you are looking for. Thats how I get to it with XP Pro.
Thanks a bunch WheelMA1, I just followed your advice and found it. Can you record more than 60 seconds worth? I have a tape recording I want to get in my computer so I can burn it on a CD.
Hey Rich, thanks for the link. I read the reviews and it gets mostly positive. They do say, however, only the first 60 seconds are free, then you must register. I think it costs $29.00, I'm thinking about it, I want to make sure it will work before I buy it. Thanks again
Oh, I guess it didnt read that. Just hit up www.download.com.com and search for 'sound recording'. Thats all I did. There were quite a few other programs available.

My project is a little unusual and possibly short term. My mom has a phone answering machine that has some messages recorded on it from a good friend and my brothers wife who both recently passed away. I thought it would be cool to somehow burn them on a CD so she could save them. I hesitate to put them on tape because tape quality isn't good and it tends to deteriorate over time. Anyway, I thought if I could figure out a way to get the recordings on my computer, the CD would be a slam dunk. Since the phone machine is "tape less", my only options are to play the messages to some recording device. Anyway, that's what I'm doing.
Well how long are the phone messages? I would imagine you could be able to take the full minute clips using the existing sound recorder, then merge those files (dont ask me how, but I bet that site has some audio editing software to try).

I think you're correct. There are probably 5-6 messages, I can't imagine any of them lasting over 60 seconds. That's by far the most reasonable approach, I just need to get her machine and bring it here so I can play them back into my remote mike. If I get each one separated in a file folder as its own file, I can burn them back to back like tracks of songs on a CD. Thanks for your input.
You said its tapeless, right? Wouldnt that mean that when it is unplugged, it erases the messages? You might want to find out BEFORE you move it. I know I have had to set up my computer in random places to accomplish goals like this.
I beleive you can record more then 60 seconds worth. Hit stop at 60 seconds worth, or just before it, and if you hit record again, it should give you another 60 seconds. Just a trick I used to use way back when...dunno if it still workson XP or not.
Used to send my girlfriend 3 or 4 minute clips before I had my cell phone.

I think the best solution is to play the massages for a tape recorder and then bring the tape recorder home to play them for the computer. That way I can be sure I have them saved before jeopardizing the original!

Saurian, I'll play around with the format before I attempt to make the final recording. I don't think it will be a problem even if I have to break them down to separate files. Thanks for your help. My mom has been saving these messages for months and my brother's wife passed away monday morning. I would love to preserve them on something permanent.
Before you record the message, hit the record button and let it go till it stops at 60 seconds, the hit the record button again. This will give you 120 seconds. You can continue to do this till the computer runs out of memory. Then when you have enough time, drag the slider back to the begining and you are ready to record. All you have to do is hit the record button and it will begin recording
Sorry to hear about your sister-in-law and friend.
This project sounds like one I attempted a couple years ago -- getting an analog recording to digital format, without significant loss of signal quality. Bottom line: I bought a stand alone machine that converts it to a CD. I was never happy with what the computer did with sound recordings, even though I purchased several enhancement software packages.
If what you do doesn't meet your satisfaction, I'd be glad to burn you a CD, no cost.
