2 questions/ choke sticks, manual or elect

O.k. I have 2 questions first of all I am having some issues with my truck. I have a 1974 ford f100 and when i'm at a stop and i push on the accelerator it seems to hesitate would that be a problem with the choke sticking? Any suggestions

2nd question I'm looking at upgrading my to a 4bbl carb, and what are the advantages of having an electric choke verses he good ole' manual choke? My father tells me to stick with a manual choke, that it will have less issues. What are your thoughts.

Thanks,
Jason

Do you have manual choke now? The only problem I have with manual chokes is for me it's been difficult to get the cheesy control cable they include with the choke to work. Easy to check. Pull the air cleaner lid and see if the choke plate is all the way open when it should be.

To me the description of the problem sounds like an accelerator pump problem.

I agree with 76supercab2. How long since your carb was last rebuilt? Also, if you've timed the engine lately and got it too retarded, that can cause a stumble too, but it's probably the acellerator pump (easy rebuild if it's a 2100 or 2150).

If it's a Holley, check the gap between the accerator pump arm and the pump diaphragm. It it's too big, it will hesitate. My money is on the accelerator pump. If it's a Ford carb, just look down into the carb with the choke wide open. Twist the throttle and see if you get an immediate squirt from the pump nozzles into the carb throats. If not, or all you get is a dribble, you need a new diaphragm, or pump piston as the case may be. My money is also on the automatic Electric chokes. I hate manuals. Your Dad is right, but to be honest, electric chokes are all but trouble free. It's the old heater style automatic chokes that used exhaust heat that used to give fits.
