I've been hearing a clunk under the right front of my 4x4 Super Duty. Spent about 2 hours till I had someone help by bouncing the truck. The bushing is bad on the sway bar? Its the bar that runs from the right side framerail across to the axle. What exactly are they calling this part? Sway Bar or track bar? Anyway the truck has only 21,000 miles and the bushing is bad. I'd like to replace it myself, but not sure what they call this. Anybody have these go bad?
Thanks fitter, I'm going to do it myself and now I know what I'm asking for! I couldn't figure out what it was and it's a tough problem to find, but thanks again!! Hopefully aftermarket lasts longer huh?
Lets make sure he gets the right part- ram, when you are saying the right frame rail.. is that the driver or passenger? Here is a description of the two parts...
The trac bar runs from the driver side frame rail to the passenger side of the axle. It is on top of the axle, runs parallel to your drag link(the bar that runs from your pitman arm to your tie rod).
Your sway-bar is the long piece of curved steel pipe that runs along the length of the axle (on the backside). It goes towards the back on the ends and each side is connected to it's own framerail by a sway bar link. These links have two bushings each, one at the mount on the sway bar, and another on the mount at the frame.
Superstroker, its the one that has an arm that mounts on the passenger side frame rail and it drops down about a foot or so, then connects to the curved bar that goes across to the other side. The arm has two bushings, one on top where it mounts to the frame and one at the bottom where it connects to the bar. The loose bushing is the one at the bottom of the arm where it connects to the bar. Since posting, its getting much worse. Driving to work this morning that thing clunked even on smooth pavement now. I'm positive thats the problem because I had a guy shake the truck back and forth while I could feel the loose bushing. I checked all the bolts and everythings tight. Why would that go bad at such low mileage? And also, can I get the bushings aftermarket, or how would I go about fixing it? Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any advice.... ram
Im not sure why they would go bad so quickly.. I would imagine you can pick up those bushings at any auto parts store.. unless your truck is still under warranty.. if so take it in and make them deal with it.
OK, thanks much. Yep, I'm pretty sure it's still under warranty, so maybe I'll have to let them deal with it huh? It drove me nuts for about 2 weeks because it sounds so obvious ( the klunk noise ) but its really hard to find. Sounds like something hitting the floorpan ya know? I crawled under this thing about 6 times till I finally found it. I have mudflaps with the chrome weights and I originally blamed them, and almost took them off!!! So anyway thanks superstroke,
