oil pressure

I have a 88 BII, 4x4, 2.9, automatic. Sometimes when you start it it taps very loudly, sometimes it taps lightly and sometimes it doesn't tap at all. Whatever it is doing it doesn't go away or change any until you cut it off and crank again. I noticed the oil pressure gauge when it starts always maxs out and stays maxed out. It does not fluctuate any. any suggestions? Also sometimes when you crank it, it will start and run for about 2 seconds. It may do this several times and then start and run fine. Any help would be appreciated.

For the valve noise I would put a real gauge on it to determine if you have the correct oil pressure, the stock ones are not very good.

For the starting problem I would start by testing fuel pressure when you have the problem.

This ticking or clicking I'm hearing, is it possible it is an electrical tick? Just happened to hear a ticking sound n the radio and it seemed like the radio ticking was in time with the ticking or clicking under the hood. Is it possible oram I reaching for straws?

Don't trust the factory oil pressure gauge oil. It sounds like either it or the sender has gone out and you might have lost oil pressure for a number of reasons. The no start is a real big clue as the fuel pump relay has a delay for the engine to build up oil pressure. You must have oil pressure after the engine starts to complete the circuit for the fuel pump.

The noise from the radio is probably just the ignition system, I don't think its related.

OK. Here's where we are now. I read the thread about the Fram oil filter maybe being the problem. Changed the filter and it immediately quit tapping. Drove it several times and had no problem then yesterday it just started tapping again. I put a pressure gauge on it today and cranked it. It went straight to 60 psi, but when I cranked it up the tapping was gone. I've not had the quitting problem lately. What do you think now?

If you can leave the real gauge connected so you can monitor things for the next few weeks, make sure you route everything in a safe location.

The fuel pressure test would be the first thing I would do the next time you have the starting problem.

Well, been watching the gauge. When you crank it cold, the oil pressure goes up to 60. Then the longer it runs the lower it gets. After it gets warm it will idle at 20. Going down the road it will fluctuate between 30 and 40. What should the pressure be?

I don't recall the exact specifications but 20psi is "normal" at idle but 30 seems low to me at speed. With these pressures you shouldn't hear any noise, are you hearing anything? What weight oil are you running now?

That is exactly what mine is doing. It is fine cold but when it warms up the oil pressure goes away. I have 20W-50 and a quart of Lucas in it... 88 XLT 4x4, 2.9L, 5 speed...
