I got a 87 ford bronco II I was wondering is it safe to do away with the EGR ??? Will it hurt performance gasmilage?? Anyone got there's disabled??? Thanks any help
Pinging or spark knock or detonation is a situation where the fuel mixture burns in such a way that it causes a funky noise in the engine. Uncorrected, ping can eventually lead to piston or cylinder damage.
On the other hand, the EGR actually helps your engine. Because of the EGR, the engine management is programmed with a more aggressive timing advance curve than it would be without the EGR system.
I'm not sure why you want to disable it, but, if you really feel that you need to, look into replacing your '87 computer with one from an '88-up 2.9. Ford took the EGR off of the 2.9 in these later years, so these computers are programmed to run without the EGR system.
Just to add a bit more... The fuel mixture in the combustion camber burns rather than exploding when it running right, pinging is the mixture exploding and thats what cause the damage to the top of the pistons, can put a hole in them. The burned exhaust gases that the EGR puts into the mixture tends to cools the mixture a helps to give you an even burn.
