I own a 1999 Ford Expedition XLT, 5.4L. I know very little about cars or trucks so I wanted to see if anyone could help me out.
Recently, occasionally I'll be turning and will hear a POP noise, which sort of feels as if I'm catching on something really quick as I turn. This noise also turns up at times if I hit a pothole or bump. They may be unrelated but they sound the same.
My truck was lowered slightly before I bought it and also has a sway bar.
I have a 99 also and I noticed the same thing. I figured it was from the all wheel drive, cause I mostly notice it after a long drive on the highway. I assume it was the hubs unlocking or something.
Anyway, I have not been concerned with it at all.
I'm with the4by4freek ... had a similar sound happen with my 99 on certain potholes and when the body swayed. Ended up being one of the links was half busted and rubbing once in a while.
Thanks for the advice guys - would this be something I would be able to notice myself? I just spent some time under there and didn't notice anything loose...
I hope you're right about the sway bar...the thing is that is the noice is much more common when I turn (almost everytime now) and not as much when I hit a bump- and it's a REALLY loud noise...almost like a CLUCK (I can feel it under me)...does this still sound like a sway bar prob?
Oh yeah - it also seems only to happen when I'm moving. If I turn my wheels stopped I can't seem to get the same problem...
I had a thunk noise/feel when turning the wheels and moving pretty slowly,,,like pulling into a parking spot. Brought it to the stealership and they claimed to have removed the front crossmember, cleaned the mating surfaces, applied liquid metal and replaced. No problems in many months now. Please do not ask me what liquid metal is,,,lol. Maybe some kind of graphite lube??? Anyway, maybe a place to start looking.
Your problem sounds exactly like a stabilizer link. Mine was actually broke inside of the rubber bushing. Inspect them closely.
Let me caution you on dropping the front crossmember. I read this on an earlier post. Thought it sounded like the source of my problem. The crossmember came out easy. But, it was a bear to get back in. It bolts into the same brackets as the torsion bars. I don’t know if that could cause the bracket to move. However, I ended up driving a wedge between the front differential and the bracket to get it to line up. (I do not recommend that.)
I doubt if they used Liquid Metal. That material is used to repair castings. More likely they used a Never Seez product.
Problem solved - I took it to my repair shop out of frustration at not finding anything. Turns out part of the problem wasn't even in the front - I had a loose stabilizer link back there. They also put some grease on the links in the front. Luckily, I wasn't charged or I would have felt like a buster : )
