I was leaving work today and i started hearing a clunking noise coming from the transfer case as soon as I started taking off. I didnt know what to do. I tried to push it farther into 2wd and it made it worse for a couply seconds.. I turned around back to work with it still clunking. As pulling into the parking lot I pushed in the clutch and pit it in 4 high and no difference at all and quickly put it back in 2wd, parked it, and shut it off and looked around. started it back up. put it in reverse then put in in gear. it made a little bit of clunking noise. then I punched the 460's throttle quickly and made the truck jump and it stopped making a clunking noise immediatley and drove fine all the way home. I got home and put in 4 high took off for a few feet then put in back in 2wd and took it around and there still was no problem. What happened??? I havnt been doing any offroading or even using 4wd. I've just been driving it back and forth to work. I did install a cb radio on my break today under the dash and maybe I accidently knocked the linkage out of a specified range??? yesterday i greased the front end and u-joints but it was fine on the ride in to work this morning. Did i damge something? I sure hope not.. I really dont feel like putting any more money into this truck. it drove fine on the way home.

ummmm........so it fixed itself? so there is no problem? you have to love a truck that fixes itself. the only thing i can think of is that it wasnt the xcase, maybe a U joint going bad, or loose. you should recheck your joints and make sure they are tight. but stomping on it you could have done damage to the point where a gear is completely stripped and makeing no sound now, or something to that extent, but i cant think of anything that would involve the xcase and then fix itself with the use of brute power.....sorry i cant be more helpful.
Really doesn't sound like your transfer case if it made no difference when you went between 2 and 4.
At least I don't feel so bad now, I'm not the only one who has stupid stuff happen to him for no apparent reason and then it fixes itself (electrical for me though) All I can say is if it happens agian, grab a friend and make him creep the truck along while you try to locate the problem outside.
I have an NP 208 in my truck currently that has a wasted chain in it and it'll do the same thing. The chain will slap in 2hi just driving around then a sudden mash of the throttle or taking a corner to shock load the case gets it to shutup. can't say this is for sure what's wrong with you, but it happens to me.
