6 to 12 volt

Hi all, new to this forum and have a question. I would like to convert my 1941 truck to a 12 volt system but due to physical limitations, namely a large belly and short arms!, I don't know if I can get in the motor to do what needs to be done myself. Does anyone know what roughly it will cost to have this professionally done? Also, does anyone know what year Ford began to use the 12 volt system? Thanks for any replies.

Welcome to FTE! Hope that the guys here can help you out with your queries.

Never heard of anyone 'having it done' by someone else. But Ford switched over to 12 volts in 1956. Was it '48 when they went to negative ground???

Anyways, good luck!

Check around and see if there are any auto electrical shops around you...they can do it. It is a fairly simple thing to do in the engine compartment, 12 V generator (or alt), 12 V voltage regulator, 12 V starter solenoid, 12 V coil, and new battery. You could try to purchase the parts yourself and take them the parts, it'll probably be cheaper than paying them for the parts since they usually charge more. That way all you pay them for is labor, and it really shouldn't take a shop too much time to swap those parts in.
