On/Off Switch

This may be a stupid question, but oh well... I have a 1942 Ford Truck (fire truck actually) and on the steering column is a switch that says On & Off. I have seen the switch in a parts catalog, but it doesn't say what it is for. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!

Scott

The steering column on off switch is for the ignition. Starting an old Ford consisted of 3 actions. 1. Put in key and turn to unlock column and ignition switch. 2. Flip the switch to ON 3. Push starter button on left side of gauges to start truck. The switch moves a contact behind the column drop that completes the ignition circuit.

Thank for the info! So, does the switch go back to the 'off' position automatically when you shut the ignition and take out the key, or do you move it to turn off the truck?

Thanks again.
