Fuel Pump Relay?
We have a 1987 Ford F-250 4x4 with a 302 in it. We use this truck for plowing. Last winter when plowing it stopped running when I was plowing in a parking lot. So we left it and got a friend of my dad's to come over later on that day to look at it. Well, when we got it back he had put a 2 inch wire from what appears to be near a relay. I guess he jumped the wires. There is a red wire that goes to the relay and also I believe a ornage and blue (?) wire as well. He put a small wire from one of these wires to the other one. It worked. My only concern is when yo turn the key over the fuel pump doesn't stay running for the normal 2-3 seconds. It runs the whole time. I am wondering if this is good or not. Thanks.

Not a good situation.
Sounds like he bypassed the relay 'cuz he couldn't find the problem. Have you checked the rollover switch? It may have gotten tripped when plowing. I think it's behind the passenger side kick panel.
The way it is now, if you had an accident, the fuel pump wouldn't shut off and could feed a fire.

rollover switch? Do you mean inertia switch? I believe it works. I had to do some fuel stuff and unhooked it and then reset it later. SHould I take this bypass wire off then put on a new relay on? I have one I could take out of a parts truck. Let meknow what you think.

I had the same problem with our ford truck. 1987 302v8. It just died one day. No power to the fuel pump on the frame. It has dual tanks so there is pumps in each tank. Anyway, I had to jumper the pump with another power source to get it to run. I checked all the fuses and the inertia switch up under the driver side on the fire wall. It was ok but there was no power to it. The truck ran for a week or 2 and then i had to change out the rear tank. Oh, none of the fuel gauges worked either. But when I reinstalled the new tank, I found that the pump in it had quit as well. But tested on the bench ok. So, is there another safety switch under the dash some where that completely shuts of all the fuel components. Even the gas gauges. When I tested the fuel selector switch, I had no power to it either, but I could get the pump in the tank to run if I used another power source from the fuse block. The only way to keep the truck running is to have the pumps jumpered and just keep the tank full. Does anyone out there have any ideas? I cant find any wiring specs. on line to trace out the problem.
