rattle,rattle!

My 2002 is a 5-speed, I get a rattling noise from under the truck when I'm accelerating , just off idle and again about halfway through any particular gear. It sounds like a sheet metal rattle, but everything seems tight, even the heat shields for the cat's. Could this be an internal rattle from the cat's, meaning they are damaged , or could it be from the clutch assembly??

I had a similar problem...turns out it was a metal stamp (had a part number on it, about the size of a business card) inside the cat. I guess it rusted loose. I was able to find it by banging on the cat with my hand and listening for the rattle...then i fished it out with needle nose pliars. sometimes those rattles can be hard to find, but try banging on the cat and see what ya find

MJEmerson,

I appreciate the tip, I never would have thought of that. BTW was it the one justs after the exhaust manifold, or the one downstream. It appears to be on the left side. I see by your signature that you are in the Army. God bless you and all of our service people active or reserve. As a former Marine I know what you guys go through, and I want all to know that for one I'm thankful that you do what you do.

appreciate the support. Semper Fi! mine was on the left side and in between the cat and the cat heat shield. Dont know if its the same problem but it may be. I am guessing I got lucky as easy as I found mine. But if you look up in the slits of the heat shield you may see it. It will be rusted. it looked to me like it was held on by four spot welds that rusted off. Hope this helps.

MJ OUT!

At one point I had a rattle like that under hard acceleration too. It drove me nuts! I figured it out though...

My stick shift has the 5 speed pattern on the top of it as all do, and the little plastic pattern thingy was slightly loose. It still is loose. I figured it out by holding on to it really tight as I accerated so it wouldn't shake. Problem solved.

air force sucks....never cared for guys who depended on technology to get the job done...besides everytime I see an Air Force guy he has clean hands, clean uniform, but a dirty weapon. Go figure. Somebody please start a new thread for this inter service rivalry.....I got truck problems to fix.....lol. Have a merry chirstmas no matter what branch your in...and remember when the bullets fly were all on the same team.
