Hello all, got a question for you all. I found an old school bus for sale, the front end looks like an early to mid 40s(I think) Ford p/u. It has the horizontal chrome bars for the grill and the headlights between the fenders and grill. Did Ford make busses like this or could it be something someone through together? It would be really nice with some TLC and I wouldn't mind crusing it around town.
yes they did make schoolbusses back then. I think the bodies were made by marmon/harrington. my father had a 1946 ford rear engined V8 transit bus for a while and it was quite unique. go for it buy it and make a cruiser out of it.... those old schoolsbusses make sweet looking rods when lowered a lil bit, there a lil big and heavy but there still cool.
Thanks for the quick responce. I'm gonna try to get over to it later and really check it out. Is there any comon bad things to look for on the older things like this, the oldest I've gone is early 70s. Thanks again.
well just really crawl around the old gal and look real good. check to be sure that the body is still atached well to the body crossmembers that what ours had a problem with. also check out the entire body, those old timers had a steel body unlike the newer schoolbuses these days. another thing too, if you decide to use its stock rear axle dont expect to go faster than 50 mph they are very low geared. I think the hood fenders and grille and stuff in the front are the same as the one ton of the day so that stuff shoulndt be as hard to find if it needs replacement. I see your in the Nevada area, hopefully the bus is from the area too cars out that way are usually not too bad on rust. main things to look for are the frame condition and the body, because these are not replaceable without lots of custom work. anything is replaceable it just depends on how bad you want to fix it. take a good flashlight with you when you go to look at it. have fun.
