I have a 90 F250 4x4 diesel. As I was heading down the highway it was like someone shifted the truck in neutral. I pulled off the side of the highway and it would not go into any gear. I mean the gear shifter moves and the linkage to the transmission moves but does not engage. Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause this to go out all of the sudden.
Ok, I have pretty the same problem, except I have a manual transmission. My 93 F-150 straight 6 now doesn't want to shift into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th. I have tension on clutch, so I don't think it's that. It's almost like those gears don't exist any more. It can be grinded into reverse. Doesn't much help, though. The shifter seems to be permanately stuck in neutral. I was able to drive it home slowly yesterday because I was able to shift it into second after trying for 20 minutes. What can be the problem? The truck only has 73,000 miles on it. When the warrantly ran out, the thing just buckled. It seems like I'm taking it in at least once every year. 2 oil leaks, bad vibration at high speeds (fixed when tires were rotated), fuel pump, computer chip for fuel intake. Ahh the problems. What can be the problem with the shifter? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
