How Much Front to Back Play in an 8.8 Pinion?

I just had some work done on the rear end of my 97 Mountaineer. The work was to fix a vibration that I was getting, all bearings were replaced including the pinion bearings. The vibration is still present and there is a LOT of noise on deceleration. I was under it this morning and noticed that the driveshaft and pinion yoke move forward and back (along the axis of the driveshaft) about 1/8-1/4". This seems pretty excessive to me. Is that much play normal?

Thanks for the help.

No. There should be absolutely zero end float in the pinion itself. It is pre-loaded to prevent it.

Thanks. Now another question if you don't mind. Would the pinion preload being off like this cause the noise on decelleration? Also would that cause a vibration under load (worse the more gas you give it--stops if you let off the gas and let it coast) at 45 MPH or up?

Like the man said above, there should be no play at all. I can't believe that a shop let it out of the garage like that. To answer your question, yes, your problems are probably centred around the crap job the shop did. Maybe a u-joint is gone now too. If you keep driving that thing at speed to find out what it sounds like, you'll probably hear a brand new frik'in horrible sound in short order

Good luck getting your money back from that shop...

Yeah...thats what I get for trusting someone else to do work for me.

When I left he said there was a "little bit of noise" from the ring and pinion. That must be the LOUD high pitched whine that I heard on the way home.

I drove about 45 miles on the way home. Do you think the ring and pinion are shot now?

Thanks for the help.

Most likely the R&P is scrap, along with the pinion bearings

Update:

I took the rear driveshaft out and took a better look at the pinion movement. The movement is about 1/16", but you can tell it is "climbing" the teeth of the ring gear when it moves in and out. I took the front driveshaft out and the vibration is gone. I plan to have the front shaft checked for balance and "talk" to the mechanic that did the bearings in the rear end.

Thanks for the help.
